Rents soar 80% post-Covid

A new report reveals that rents across Australia’s capital cities have jumped as much as 80% since Covid.
All inner city areas of capital cites have seen massive rent increases in the past five years
Central Melbourne rents have increased by 72.6%
The biggest increase has been the Perth suburb of Balga where rents have jumped by 80%
Canberra has seen the smallest rent increases
One Nation faces policy confusion
Recently elected One Nation MP David Farley claimed that their party’s immigration policy was “not too different” to Labor.
David Farley claimed One Nation would set a net overseas migration goal that is 5000 people higher than forecast in the federal budget
In response, Pauline Hanson said that One Nation’s policy is 130,000 net overseas migration
Energy minister Chris Bowen said that “it appears to me, based on what Mr Farley said, that One Nation now agrees with the approach of the government”
Ray White repeats rent rise warning
Ray White chief economist Nerida Conisbee says the forecast of rents potentially rising by 30% is not being taken seriously.
She says that their own modelling predicts rents will rise by 30% because “investing in property has now become far less attractive”
She also pushed back on Treasury modelling claiming rents would only rise by $2 a week, saying “they won’t release that modelling. We can’t get a clear read on all the assumptions that they’ve made.”
Vic premier lashes out at Liberals
The Liberals have announced a new policy to reform the court system and appoint new judges to enforce stricter punishments for offenders. In response:
Ben Carroll says that the Liberal party are “upset that we’ve captured the law and order agenda” despite record high crime under Labor
